PASS THE POPCORN, PLEASE!

Previous Entry: Ten Things Tuesday 9/23/08

One of my favorite ways to relax on the weekend is to catch a great movie! I love to escape into someone else's story for an hour or two. Whether it be action, drama, comedy, or suspense...a true STORY or based on a TRUE story...or something we can see with the kids, movies are an easy way to just "chill".

There is one small catch to movies, though...you have to pay to get in the theater, and a lot of times it's not cheap! The majority of our movie-watching seems to be done at home these days. For most movies, we are more than happy to wait a year if we can see it for free on cable television. And if a year seems too far away? We are usually able to rent it within six months or so. That sets us back less than $5, and usually it's only a $1. There is also the "dollar movie" option, which could become available just about anytime after a movie is released depending on how successful ~ or rather unsuccessful ~ tickets sales have been. It's been a long time, though, since the "dollar movie" was actually just a dollar!

Occasionally, though, there are the movies that you a) just don't want to wait to see, or b) feel that seeing it on a big screen will enhance the enjoyment of the movie. Like "Batman", or "Spider-Man", or "Lord of the Rings". They beg for a ginormous screen and a great sound system! Movie tickets around here can get as expensive as $12, but the average ticket price seems to be around $9. We also have several theaters that include a dine-while-you-watch option, which is pretty cool if you don't have time to catch dinner and a movie but want to do both. The thought of paying $9 for a movie, though...well that just makes my stomach turn a little bit.

We, however, are fortunate enough to have a better option! There is a movie theater near us that sells tickets for $6. That's first-run movie tickets, y'all! Six. Dollars. But if we can time it just right...it's only FOUR dollars! It's not too hard to catch the last matinee of the day and then enjoy dinner afterward. Two first-run movie tickets and a shared entree at a non-fast-food joint? That makes for one great date night under $20!

Because we should all relax a little on the weekend, here is an easy question for you: How much do first-run movie tickets cost in your town?

Kailani at An Island Life celebrates Aloha Friday every week (IN HAWAII ~ lucky girl!!!) and has decided to take it easy on her blog posting, too. To quote her, "No long posts, no deep soul searching revelations...just a little fun."

Each Friday, she hosts "Aloha Friday", a carnival in which she asks one simple question for you to answer, and it never requires a lengthy response.

It's so easy and laid back, like, well...just like island life! If you’d like to participate, just answer my question in the comments section, then post your own question on your blog and leave your link at Kailani's blog! And...even if you don't want to join in the carnival with your own question, you can still answer my question in the comments section here!

This week Kailani's question is: What is the oldest item of clothing that you own?

The oldest item of my own personal clothing that I own is the little red dress I wore home from the hospital when I was born! ~~~ The oldest item of clothing I own that belonged to someone else is an old velveteen striped coat that used to be my mom's. I'm not sure how old it is exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's older than me! ~~~ The oldest item of my own personal clothing that I own that actually still fits is my high school letter jacket!

Aloha, Y'all!!!

Way too much!
$7.50 a ticket.
For many many years we didn't pay because our son was the projectionist and we would have movie marathon days.

I will be honest, I have absolutely no clue. I have not been to a movie since I was pregnant with my youngest son (now 16 months old). I prefer to catch movies on DVD and often take them out of the library.

Have a great weekend :)

I believe tickets in our town and surrounding towns are around $13 a ticket for an evening show. Which is why we almost never go - but you can still get discounted tickets by going to AAA or a BJs or costco - I haven't done that in awhile either, but I think it averaged the movie ticket price to $7 a ticket (but you have to buy them in bulk).

I don't know! I don't really like movies. (un-American, I know!) However, my girls love them so each weekend we rent a kids movie and all watch it together with popcorn. Not exactly the answer to your question, but that's the extent of my movie-watching. :)

I always go to the matinee if I'm lucky enough to go to the movies...I think it's about $5 or 6 something for the matinee??? Can't remember--it's been about 8 months since I saw a movie in a theater!

$7 or $8. Did you post the letter meme? :D

Good question! If you go early enough I think it is 9, but if you go in the evening, it is pushing 12 something....ack!

I have no idea - it's been at least a year since I've been to a movie at the theater, other than the one that I saw recently and had free passes for, so didn't look at how much it would've cost otherwise. I know it's way too expensive though.

I believe it is 10.75! Which is crazyyyy!

It's been so long since I've been to a movie theater that I have no idea what it costs now. It used to be only $4.00 back in the day when I used to go.

Hello, there,
So, I read through some of your blog yesterday. Very fun. Livia talks about you a lot; she said she really loves talking to you and that you have been a great friend to her. She and David have really enjoyed their time there, from what they tell me, and will miss you all. I hope you can keep up through blogging and e-mail! I know your words of encouragement once she is on the field will be very much appreciated! Thank you for taking care of her for us!
Oh, we have been wanting to go to the movies since living here, but they rarely show any in English, and when they do, it is at 9pm. Plus, I think they are $15-$20 a ticket. We used to like to catch the first showing of the day when in the States. It was $4 ($1 cheaper than the regular matinee price)! The $1 theater was $2, which we loved too!
Oh, and we can't rent movies here, that we know of! You can buy them, but they won't always be in English! Oh well!

I think it's $6.00 but we always go to the matinee which is $3.50. It's the concession stand that kills us!

It costs between 120 to 180 Philippine pesos. Depends on whether it's a Tagalog movie or a blockbuster.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

I think our movie costs about $8.00

We don't usually go to first run movies. We used to have a $1.50 theatre but it just closed a few months ago! bummer

We did see American Girl this summer as a treat!

We're up to $10 a ticket on the weekend evenings. I love the movies but that is just outrageous. I do a lot of Netflix. Luckily movies come to dvd pretty quickly now.
